Day 14 – Wish you were here – well not really…
I love to travel; and I’ve been blessed to do quite a lot of it in my life – though not nearly as much as I would like. Arden and I are preparing to leave this Friday on a girls’ trip with my mom, sister and niece. I’m excited to go and have some getaway time with my family.
I went to lunch with a friend of mine today and we got to talking about the “wish you were here” postcards that seem to be so ubiquitous with travelers. We laughed about that fact that probably those sentiments are not 100% accurate. I mean, a lot of the reason we travel is to get away from our day to day lives; and that typically includes the people in our day to day lives. If we really wished they were with us, we probably would have invited them. So, do we send the “wish you were here” greetings to friends and family because we really miss them? Or is it just a way to stick it to them because they aren’t on vacation too? Terry thought maybe the reason we send such a card was because had we known how exciting and enjoyable our travel destination was prior to our departure, we WOULD have invited them and so we are basically apologizing for our thoughtlessness with a picture of wherever we are.
I don’t know. I don’t remember ever sending such a card, but most of that is because I never remember to buy the postcards and can’t imagine a time that I ever have had postage on my person. Also, finding mailboxes in this day and age is like a game of Where’s Waldo – have you noticed that? They are hard to find! So, my friends and family have been spared the braggadocious sentiment from my travels.
Arden’s class had a postcard challenge this year, friends and family of the students from all over the country sent cards to the school from the states where they were either living or visiting – it was pretty cool, but I still am not really inspired to take up the postcard sending habit. It just seems a little narcissistic.
Clearly Day 14 is not my most profound day in this experiment. I will endeavor to do better tomorrow, however no promises. But I will warn you that in order to complete this 30 day challenge, I will have to write while I am on vacation – so you may just get an online “wish you were here” post – and I will really mean it. Well maybe – probably not.
See ya tomorrow!
