A few of my favorite things…but not in a Sound of Music or Oprah kinda way

Happy Friday!  I’m not sure why I felt the need to start with that greeting, because you may be reading this on a Saturday or a Monday for all I know, but I never really know how to start these writings. So Happy ___Day!  (aka be happy on whatever day you happen to be reading this post – or don’t be, because I really won’t know either way – but you will and isn’t being happy better than not being?  I say yes!)

I realized today that the last couple of posts have been a bit on the heavy side – i.e. my craziness was a bit more front and center than I typically put it; and so today is just for fun.  I’ve been noticing some things in my everyday world lately that just make me happy that I have stumbled upon them, which got me to thinking maybe you would be happy to know about them as well.  But like I said before, no pressure on the happiness thing.

So here are a few of my favorite things (but I’m not including raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens, because I have neither roses nor kittens in my world currently):

Taco Plates

Do you have these in your life?  If you do not, get yourself to the store and buy them immediately.  I bought some similar to these about 2 years ago, and they are total game changers – especially if you are a Taco Tuesday family, like we are. My favorite store, Aldi, had these on sale last week for like $1.50 each. Mine don’t have the same fun side dish wells on either side of the taco holder section, so if you get the newer version you are totally living your best taco eating life.

The reason I feel the need to make sure you are aware of these amazing little products this week stems from the fact that our family worked a kids’ camp at our church this week. During the pre and post program of each night, this song was played on a loop with a few others:

So tacos have been on my mind – good luck getting THAT song out of your head this weekend.  You’re welcome!

BBQ Pork Roast

I made this recipe a week ago and I’m still dreaming about it – it as SO tasty.  The BBQ sauce is from Aldi and if you have shopped Aldi at all, you know that they are infamous about having some things one time and then never again – and I fear this may be the case for this BBQ sauce, so I bought 5 jars.  Because, you know FEAR!  Here’s the recipe:

1 – pork boneless loin roast (3 1/2 lb)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 medium onion, sliced
1 cup chicken broth

Mix the seasonings together and rub over the roast. Place sliced onion in the bottom of the crock pot; lay seasoned pork roast on top of onions; pour chicken broth over the roast. Cover. Cook for 8-10 hours on LOW.

You can shred or not depending on your desired way to serve.  I suggest “pulling” the pork; topping with BBQ sauce and serving on brioche buns – DELICIOUS!

Puzzles and THIS thing (because apparently I’m a puzzle person now)
puzzle pad

When we were on our little Father’s Day trip to Branson, we went to this crazy 5 and 10 store that had everything you never knew you wanted available for sale. One section was completely dedicated to all things puzzles. I told Terry that I used to like to do puzzles and that it might be fun to try one again.  He was all encouraging about it (and by that I mean he said something like: “huh, that’s interesting – look at all those whatchamacallits.”) and so I ended up leaving with a 550 piece puzzle and the above Puzzle Roll up thingamajig which really does work and allows you to puzzle when you wanna and put it away when you don’t.

Since this purchase I have assembled 3 puzzles and have another 4 to be done – but as I mentioned in my previous post – my 41 year old eyes ain’t what they used to be and after a certain period of time even the readers don’t help with puzzling. I foresee a magnifying class in my future.

Podcasts

I love a good podcast – don’t you?  Here are a few I’ve recently discovered that are always good company while I’m cleaning the house or in my earbuds while I’m work.  I don’t do iTunes – so all these can be found on the Stitcher app and also on iTunes because Steve Jobs is still ruling the world from the grave!  But I will never be an Apple gal – just out of spite.

What Should I Read Next?

I love to read and I HIGHLY recommend this podcast if you are at a loss for your next reading adventure. But beware – this could be your fate if you binge the show and EVERY book is one you want to try!

The Big Boo Cast

http://bigboo.libsyn.com

This hilarious podcast is hosted by Sophie Hudson (Boo Mama) and Melanie Shankle (Big Mama), bloggers, authors and speakers, and is just a really fun discussion about randomness like family hi jinx, food, SEC football, makeup, pop culture, pets,  etc. They crack each other up which in turn cracks me up. They are a little spotty on their schedule and can sometimes go a few months without a podcast, but I’m always excited and tickled when they make the effort. It is what I think most of our conversations with a really good girlfriend would sound like if we thought to record them.

The Sporkful

http://www.sporkful.com/tag/podcast-episodes/

The Sporkful is a podcast about eaters. It is interesting, fun and a little crass at times. Whenever I listen I always wonder – how did you think to make THAT a show?  So I think they are doing what a good podcast is supposed to. If you like food, eating, or talking about food and eating – this is a good one to try out.

Ear Hustle

https://www.earhustlesq.com/

This podcast is recorded by inmates in San Quentin prison.  It is pretty new and I think I’m only 3 episodes in, but I’m interested. WARNING: the language is a little harsh, but not in a “let’s cuss because it is edgy” way – I imagine the inmates are actually tamping down their language a bit for our delicate ears. That being said, I wouldn’t listen with young ones around.  But it is pretty interesting to hear the stories of how people got to where they are and how they are making prison life “normal” for them.

And Finally……..

This Door

This is not something you can run out and buy or listen to, but this door is one of my current all time favorite things!

This is the door to my daughter’s “wing” of our new house. See how it shuts? You know what is on the other side of this door?  A mess the likes you have never seen. The ONLY thing that is keeping me sane this summer is this door – because when the mess is just too much for me to walk by without losing my pleasing personality, I can shut this door and pretend that the house stops here.

I can get to all of the rest of the rooms I need even with this door shut.  The kitchen, living room, dining room, my bedroom and bathroom, and all exits are on THIS side of the door.   I think this door is God’s way of saying – “you moved your city-loving behind out to the woods to be supportive of your family and try something outside your comfort zone; you were blessed with an imaginative pack rat of a child; you are still in the growth process for patience, so to help you along with this journey –  I’m blessing you with this door.” He probably didn’t really say that, but I do thank Him for this door pretty much every day.

Well that’s all for now. Let me know if you try any of the above – except for my door, because that is just weird!

See ya soon!
